Why & How should you use an email subdomain?

The basics of email subdomains

Using a subdomain, rather than your main domain, allows you to separate the sender reputation concerns of the domain which is being used to contact prospective customers.

Many of our customers separate their marketing emails from their transactional emails through subdomains, which means they set up at least two separate subdomains to send different types of emails.

What’s the difference between an email domain and an email subdomain?

Why subdomains are used with marketing emails

Inbox providers like Gmail and Yahoo care about email reputation, which is a grade for how well users interact with your emails. If Gmail sees that their users are highly engaged with your emails, it’s highly likely that you’re following email best practices, and therefore have a positive sender reputation. But if users are sending negative signals to Gmail, like marking your email as spam, then that’s bad.

Your email reputation is based on both domain reputation and IP address reputation and subdomains have a different reputation than their root domains. This practice ensures the separation of DNS for the main domain and its dedicated subdomain, a measure that not only aids in maintaining a clear distinction but also contributes to improved deliverability. One key advantage of utilizing a dedicated subdomain lies in preventing “Sender Domain Verification” errors. By using a dedicated email sending sub(domain), potential verification issues are minimized, enhancing the overall reliability of your campaigns.

An “email subdomain” delivers email from the subdomain instead of the root domain. Imagine your email coming from an “email subdomain” like jane@m**g.funnelbud.com. This subdomain is exclusively used for your emails.

Why does this matter? Well, if your marketing emails are linked to your main website domain and something goes wrong, it could impact whether potential customers from getting other transactional emails from your main domain. It’s like giving your marketing emails their own space to travel, ensuring they have the best chance of reaching your audience.

How email subdomains are commonly implemented

The article below explains the detailed steps on how add a dedicated (sub)domain for for sending emails.

Dedicated sub(domain)

When you have added and verified your subdomain for your email addresses, you’ll need to add the subdomain as a secondary domain to your existing email accounts. This allows you to use the subdomain naturally when sending emails. Google has instructions for setting up a subdomain, which they call a ‘secondary domain,. Please check the URL below

It’s important not to set up these accounts in your G Suite as ‘alternative domains’ because these are just aliases, and using alias accounts is not recommended for email deliverability. If you use Microsoft mailboxes, you can also set up subdomains by following their instructions and updating your DNS records accordingly. Please check the link below:
